Tan Thanh Beach: Fresh Clams, Alluvial Sands and a Change of Scenery

Tan Thanh Beach is not loud or hurried. Its charm lies in a long pier reaching into the wind, exceptionally fresh seafood and the rustic beauty of Vietnam's longest black-sand coastline.

An Alluvial Coast

The Unusual Beauty of a Black-Sand Beach

First, a friendly word of advice: do not come to Tan Thanh expecting crystal-clear water or powdery white sand. This is a mangrove estuary, with dark sand mixed with soft silt. That fertile alluvium is precisely what has made Tan Thanh one of the region's richest seafood grounds.

Although it is not a swimming beach, Tan Thanh is an excellent place to slow down. Its most striking landmark is the pier stretching more than 300 meters out to sea. Stand at the end, look across the clam watch huts scattered over the water and breathe in the salty air—the worries of city life soon feel far away.

It is a wonderful setting for young travelers looking for atmospheric photographs, and for families who want open space where children can fly kites, walk along the seawall and observe the simple daily life of local fishing communities.

Choosing the Right Time

The Best Times for Sunrise and Sunset

Like most coastal destinations, Tan Thanh is at its best before the sun becomes too strong. Early morning, from 6:00 to 8:00 a.m., is the liveliest time. At low tide, the water retreats to reveal glistening black flats, where hundreds of local workers can be seen raking for clams and gathering shellfish—a vivid scene full of energy.

Those who prefer a later start should visit after 3:30 p.m. The air is cooler then, and sunset turns the alluvial water gold. Standing on the breezy pier while waves break gently against the seawall is deeply relaxing.

Avoid the exposed midday hours between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The pier has no shade, and the coastal sun can quickly drain the group's energy.

A Gift from the Sea

Sweet, Succulent Tan Thanh Clams

Food lovers often say, “You have not truly visited Go Cong until you have eaten Tan Thanh clams.” The mineral-rich silt produces plump clams with pearly white flesh and an unusually deep natural sweetness.

A steaming pot of clams with lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves is often all you need. The broth is clean, sweet and gently spicy. Beyond clams, eateries along the shore and around Cau Muong hamlet serve grilled mantis shrimp, horseshoe crab, scallion-oil vop clams and firm steamed mud crab at very reasonable prices.

Choose one of the simple thatched-roof restaurants by the dyke, especially around Huong Bien Restaurant, and confirm the prices before ordering. Peeling shrimp, raising a glass with friends and listening to the waves is an experience that easily wins people over.

A 17-Kilometer Coastal Ride

A Breezy Ride from Go Cong Hideaway

Tan Thanh Beach is about 17 km from Go Cong Hideaway, or 30–40 minutes by road. The route is straightforward and easy, passing green rice fields and peaceful villages—an ideal escape from the city.

Once you are in the area, make time for Rach Bun Rock Beach, a photo spot that has recently become popular with travelers. Rows of wave-break rocks, patches of bright green moss and a raw, open coastline create beautifully atmospheric photographs. Sunset is the best time, when waves burst into white spray against the stone embankment.

For a two-day, one-night stay, spend the first day exploring the heritage sites in town and resting at the homestay. On the second morning, set out early for the beach, enjoy the breeze and a generous seafood meal, then return to central Go Cong at a relaxed pace.

Bring a light jacket for sun and wind, sunglasses and sunscreen. If you buy fresh seafood for an evening BBQ at the homestay, ask the vendor to pack it carefully over ice so it stays sweet and fresh.

Plan the Day Realistically

Should You Add the Beach to a One-Day Itinerary?

The answer is yes, but the day may feel rushed. Trying to cover Go Cong's old houses and mausoleums and also walk out to Tan Thanh Beach in a single day can be tiring, especially for older family members or young children.

We recommend choosing one focus: either spend the day around the heritage sites and Go Cong Market, or head directly to Tan Thanh for seafood and coastal scenery. Avoid packing too many stops into the schedule.

Staying overnight at Go Cong Hideaway makes the decision much easier. You will have enough time for both the town and the beach without losing the relaxed spirit of the trip.
